Spotlight Teacher: Mr. G

By: Nelson Cummiskey

Math is one of those subjects where students usually either love it or hate it. When you’re in Mr. G’s class, it’s really easy to love it. Mr. G is one of the most famous teachers at North Springs due to his sharp wit and ability to relate to students. Every time you go into G’s room, you have to expect to laugh. He is the most senior math teacher at North Springs and his experience is on display no matter what class he teaches. Mr. G loves math so much, that he doesn’t care what class it is, he wants to teach it. From Algebra 1 to AP Calculus BC, Mr. G can teach it all.

At the beginning of each year, Mr. G’s goal is for his students to understand all the concepts and to have them be successful in the standardized tests at the end of the year. However, test scores aren’t everything. G also feels that building a relationship with students is important so that he knows how to help them to the best of his ability. He fully understands that math can be quite unexciting at times. He admits that “Math was not my favorite subject in high school.” This just goes to show that your least favorite subject today, could become your passion later in life. This is because “anybody who studies hard and works hard and has the right conditions can be successful.”

Mr. G has wanted to be a teacher since he was young. He always had something in him that wanted to teach. He says, “Since I was in high school I was tutoring kids and I enjoyed it and it was very rewarding for me to teach and I got satisfaction from it.” He loves watching students make connections between things that they know. According to him, “students know more than they think they know,” so when he can get them to see a sliver of their potential, that is a win to him.

Mr. G is one of the most compassionate and understanding teachers at North Springs and probably in all of Fulton County. He can be a good person to vent to in addition to comic relief throughout the day. But, at the end of the day, he is a teacher, and he is good at what he does. Even if you’re not in his class, if you want to learn, go to G.
