FONS, other parent organizations, help school grow

A group of parent organizations, including Friends of North Springs (FONS) Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), Friends of Math and Science (FOMAS), the Theater Booster, and the Spartan Athletic Booster Club (SABC), have provided a multitude of services for North Springs recently through the Fall Teacher grants.

These organizations provide materials and programs for teachers which would not usually be funded within the school budget. These materials and programs are meant to enhance the instructional opportunities of teachers and their classrooms.

All of the grants these organizations provided were met with enthusiasm from students and teachers alike. Aldo Bacallao, video broadcast teacher, cheerfully exclaimed, “Wow, can it get any better than this?” in response to the FONS grant for three studio lights for classes in Career and Tech Education. FONS in addition purchased the new orange umbrellas for the senior courtyard. In addition, the entire ninth grade English Language Arts team received books including A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier and Of the Glass Castle: A memoir to improve reading and critical thinking skills. Teachers Kristie Zachary, Christine Pekatos, Sheena Middlebrooks, Cassie Graeff, Jill McEachern, and Darrell Howard all thanked FONS, “On behalf of the 9th grade ELA Team, we want to thank you for granting us two new books to use this Spring. We are thrilled to introduce new material to the kids and see engagement levels increase as well as simple enjoyment of reading. We truly appreciate not only the gift of the novels, but also the support.”

Especially grateful was Sallie Holloway, Interactive media teacher, “Thank you all so much for the new DSLK cameras, memory cards and camera bags for the Web and Digital pathway students! They (and me) are very excited to use them! The support that your organization and the leaders I’ve been honored to work with provide for me and our entire school is invaluable. We could not provide for our students like we do without you. Thank you!”

The programs that are being created with these grants are serving a great purpose and helping the student body further their education. The Yearbook team can now create more vibrant and beautiful tributes to the school year with their new cameras provided. The Entrepreneurship class is getting a chance to experience what running a business would really feel like, thanks to the loan to enhance the Plato Lab where the Juice Joint is located. The stand has grown in popularity and is even becoming an easy lunch alternative for many teachers and students.

Many teachers and students seem to be grateful for FONS involvement in the school, in addition to the other parent organizations.
