A new school year at North Springs means a new football season for the Spartans. This year, a new season also means a new starting varsity quarterback. The Spartans’ new starting quarterback, Junior Rees Viersen, has already broken records and is leading this new looking Spartan football team.
On Friday, September 11th, the North Springs Spartans (Varsity team) took on the River Ridge Knights at home. The game ended in a 45-43 victory for the Spartans. Not only was it a great win, but Rees Viersen broke the North Springs record with 5 touchdown passes in a single game. Rees also threw for 387 yards and ran for a touchdown. “I know it may sound cliche, but the record really wouldn’t have mattered to me if we didn’t win the game,” stated Viersen.
This is Viersen’s second year on the varsity football team. Last year, as a sophomore, he started against the dreaded Riverwood Raiders. He led the Spartans to win that game. Even though last year the Spartans won the rivalry game, the Spartans ended up with a 2-8 record with both wins coming late in the season. So far this year’s team looks notably better, beating Dunwoody in an exhibition game and beating River Ridge. “I really feel as though this year, we have a TEAM. Last year was a great group of guys and athletes, but this year we really made an effort to come together as a group, as a family, and I think it’s paying off,” stated Viersen. He also said that the team really hit the weight room this summer and were very motivated to get better this offseason.
As the starting quarterback, Rees has a lot of responsibility as the leader of the offense and his performance can sometimes determine whether the team wins or loses more than others. Rees stated, “Coming into games I don’t like to get hyped up like the other guys. As a quarterback you can’t get too amped or too excited. You need to stay calm to make reads and stay accurate.” Viersen uses this mentality coming into every game and it was shown against River Ridge.
The Spartans next game is at Kell on October 3rd. They look to win after coming up with a 33-7 loss against Sprayberry on September 18th. They have had a week to rest with a bye week and are looking to beat Kell after losing to them last year.
