The North Springs Swim and Dive team once again advanced to the State wim meet held at Georgia Tech. A total of 8 North Springs swimmers qualified for 6 events total.
Junior girls Elizabeth Gilbert, sophomores Sophie Laupus, Elly Gasaway, and Rebecca Cohen, and freshman Rebecca Boyd qualified for the state meet in the events of 200 yard freestyle relay and the 400 yard freestyle relay. Sophomore Rebecca Cohen was the only student from North Springs to qualify in individual events. Rebecca swam in the 100 yard backstroke and the 200 yard and the individual medley (IM).
Senior boys Justin Cohen and Sam Satterfield and sophomores Kevin Hopper and Rees Viersen qualified in the 200 yard freestyle relay and the 400 yard freestyle relay.
The boys placed 35th in the 400 yard freestyle relay, but were disqualified in the 200 yard freestyle relay after a student false started.
The girls placed 30th in the 400 yard freestyle relay and placed 26th in the girls 200 yard freestyle relay. Rebecca Cohen placed 13th in the 200 IM. Rebecca was seeded 2nd in the state for 100 yard backstroke, but took 10th place in preliminaries and 9th place in state at finals.
“Our coaches this year are very involved. Coach Thomas is always by the side of the pool cheering us on. He’s helped a lot of us to drop time on our events. The atmosphere at state was so hype. It was crazy, everybody’s cheering each other on and even if it’s not for you it gets you so pumped up for your race. Being at prelims with the whole team was awesome, but going to finals is a whole different atmosphere. There are walk out songs and the announcers say your name before your race, it’s an experience I will never forget. I got a personal best in my 200 IM and was off the school record by .2 seconds. I had friends cheering me on throughout the whole meet and the season and made it an experience I will never forget,” said sophomore Rebecca Cohen.
